A journey of compassion, commitment and community healthcare transformation since 2005
Sawangin Gram Vikas Sanstha (SGVS) was established in 2005 with a singular, powerful purpose: to bring quality healthcare to the doorsteps of rural Jharkhand's most underserved communities. What began as a small community organization driven by compassion and a deep understanding of rural hardships has grown into one of the region's most trusted healthcare institutions.
The Khunti district of Jharkhand, with its rolling hills and dense forests, is home to some of India's most marginalized tribal communities. For decades, access to even basic healthcare — let alone specialized eye care — was virtually nonexistent here. Patients would travel over 100 kilometers to reach the nearest eye hospital and many simply went without treatment, losing their sight to conditions that were entirely preventable or curable. It was this glaring gap that inspired the founding of SGVS.
In 2010, SGVS took a transformative step by establishing the SGVS Hospital and Research Centre on NH75E Chaibasa Road in Anigara, Khunti. The hospital was designed to be more than just a treatment facility — it was conceived as a comprehensive eye care ecosystem combining cutting-edge medical technology with a deeply patient-first philosophy. From its earliest days, the hospital offered free or heavily subsidized care, ensuring that no patient would be turned away due to an inability to pay.
Today, SGVS has evolved from its humble origins into a leading eye care institution, having treated over 50,000 patients and performed thousands of sight-restoring surgeries. Our comprehensive ecosystem now includes a fully equipped hospital, mobile eye vans that traverse the most remote villages, community outreach camps, school screening programs and partnerships with national and international organizations. Yet at our core, we remain the same community-driven organization — guided by the belief that every individual, no matter how remote their village or limited their means, deserves the gift of sight.
To eradicate preventable blindness in rural Jharkhand by providing accessible, affordable and high-quality eye care services to every individual, regardless of their socioeconomic status. We believe that vision is a fundamental right, not a privilege and our mission drives every decision we make — from the technologies we invest in, to the villages we reach, to the patients we serve without charge.
A Jharkhand where no person suffers from avoidable blindness, where every rural family has access to quality eye care and where vision loss is prevented through early detection and timely treatment. We envision a future where distance and poverty are no longer barriers to seeing the world clearly.
These values guide every aspect of our work — from patient care to community outreach to organizational decisions.
Every patient who walks through our doors is treated with dignity, respect and genuine care. We understand the fear and uncertainty that comes with vision problems and we strive to make every interaction a comforting experience.
We are committed to breaking down barriers — geographic, financial and social — that prevent rural communities from accessing quality eye care. Our mobile vans and outreach camps ensure that care reaches those who cannot reach us.
From our surgical outcomes to our patient care protocols, we maintain the highest standards of medical excellence. Our commitment to quality is reflected in our accreditation, our equipment and our continuously trained staff.
We are not just a hospital; we are part of the community. Our programs are designed with and for the people we serve, ensuring that our interventions are culturally appropriate, sustainable and truly impactful.
The dedicated individuals who guide SGVS's mission and ensure our work reaches those who need it most.
